The Invisible Influence: How Brands Are Chosen Before the Click

When a shopper asks AI what to buy, does your brand even show up?

When a shopper asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude what to buy, the answer arrives as a shortlist. Whether your brand is on it depends on things your click and conversion reports were never built to track. Luth Research followed shopper behavior across AI platforms, search, and retail sites to see how that shortlist gets built and what it does to sales.

The Funnel Became an Ecosystem

Shoppers used to move through a funnel. Now they move through an ecosystem, pulled along by AI conversations, reviews, social content, and retail comparisons at the same time. Most measurement still covers the familiar steps: search, retail visits, and the final purchase. The back-and-forth a shopper has with an AI assistant before any of that happens sits outside those dashboards entirely.

That missing stretch is the invisible influence, and it's already deciding which brands get considered.

AI's Influence, by the Numbers

AI is driving 20% more conversion than non-AI shopping paths across Amazon, Walmart, and Target

Paths that include AI run 16 minutes longer on average, time spent comparing and validating before a purchase

AI-only paths, where a shopper skips search entirely, grew 41% in the past six months alone

Invisible Influence

Observed, Not Recalled

Asking shoppers which AI tools shaped a purchase gets you a guess. Luth's ZQ Intelligence panel records the behavior itself across AI platforms, search, content, and retail, so each AI recommendation can be tied to what the shopper eventually bought.

Two Ways Into the AI Shortlist

Inside AI, shoppers behave a lot like they do in traditional brand health tracking. Some bring a brand to the conversation and ask for more like it. That's unaided awareness: the loyalist who already has a name in mind. Others describe a need and let AI make the recommendation. That's aided awareness, and the shopper has no brand in mind until AI supplies one.

In skincare, we found different brands winning each side. Olay, Aquaphor, and Laneige showed up most often when shoppers brought the brand to ChatGPT themselves. The Ordinary, Eucerin, and Innisfree were the brands ChatGPT suggested when shoppers had no brand in mind at all. Same platform, two very different paths to getting chosen.

From Ranking Links to Earning Recommendations

Search engine optimization has always been about ranking links. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is about earning a place on the shortlist AI hands a shopper directly. That shortlist is built from owned content like product descriptions, paid campaigns, and earned media like reviews and social conversation. If a brand isn't feeding that mix, AI has nothing to work with when it builds the list.

Brands used to compete for shelf space. Now they're competing for a much smaller shelf, one AI builds before a shopper ever clicks.

Where Your Category Stands

Some categories are already being reshaped by AI more than others. Beauty and tools see high AI influence paired with strong conversion. Electronics and books see high AI influence but a smaller conversion lift. Grocery and home goods show low AI influence today but a high conversion impact whenever AI is used, which makes them the likeliest to be disrupted next. Find out where your category falls and what that means for your strategy.
